Act Dead or OOF Meaning & Glossary

The name is an instruction and a consequence bolted together: act dead — freeze and pass as a mannequin — or OOF, the classic Roblox death sound. “Play dead, or die.” Below, every term the game and its community actually use, defined from the official Roblox listing rather than guesswork. The name, broken down

“Act Dead” — the survivor job. Hold still, stay silent, look like furniture. See what acting dead involves.
“or” — the stakes. There is no third outcome in a round.
“OOF”— failure. Roblox’s death sound became the platform’s universal word for getting eliminated, so the title tells you the whole game loop in three words.

Roles, actions & round terms

Hunter

Role

The single player per round who is trying to find everyone else. The description opens with "The Hunter is coming. Don’t let them know you’re alive." With a 10-player server cap, one Hunter faces at most nine mannequins.

Mannequin

Role

The survivor role. "Pretend to be a mannequin and blend in!" — you hold a still pose among the props and try to be indistinguishable from set dressing.

Act dead

Action

The behaviour the whole game is named after: stop moving, stay quiet, and give the Hunter no reason to look twice. It is not a button — it is discipline. Full walkthrough on the Act Dead page.

Spotted

State

Being identified as a player rather than a prop. "Stay quiet or you might get spotted!" Noise and movement are the two triggers named in the official description.

Cough

Mechanic

"Hold in your cough or get Hunted!" A timed pressure mechanic that forces stillness to break eventually. It is what stops a room full of frozen players from stalling a round indefinitely.

Structure

One Hunter-versus-mannequins cycle, ending when the Hunter runs out of time or one survivor is "the last one standing". Rounds are also the unit the x2 Permanent gamepass multiplies.

Win condition

"Outlast the Hunter and be the last one standing!" — the stated survivor objective, straight from the Roblox listing.

Map vote

Lobby

Between rounds the lobby votes on the next map. The x2 Vote gamepass (R$67) is described simply as "2x Map Voting", i.e. your ballot counts twice.

Currency

The currency you earn per round. Referenced officially only through the x2 Yen gamepass (R$99): "Earn Twice As Much Yen From A Round!". No official earn-rate table exists, so any site quoting exact per-round Yen is guessing.

Roblox term

A one-time Robux purchase attached to a specific experience — not a subscription, and not transferable between games. Act Dead or OOF currently sells four.

Both are described only as "Limited Time Tool for SUMMER EVENT" — 79studios has published no in-round effect for either, and we will not speculate on what they do.

Badge

The game’s only badge, awarded at a 100% win rate — effectively everyone who loads in gets it. That makes its award count a decent public proxy for unique-player numbers, which we track on the player count page.

Name, slang & things this is not

OOF

Roblox slang

The default death/reset sound a Roblox avatar used to make, and by extension community shorthand for dying or failing. Roblox pulled the original clip on 26 July 2022 following a licensing dispute with composer Tommy Tallarico, whose version originated in the 2000 PC game Messiah, and shipped a replacement default the same day. Roblox announced the sound’s return in July 2025.

A frequent search mix-up. Dead or Alive 2 is Team Ninja’s 1999 fighting game (and a 2000 Takashi Miike film) — unrelated to anything on this site.
